for information on other providers from whom green energy may still be
available. Green-e reports, "Unfortunately, because of the
power situation in California, nearly all green power suppliers have
dropped out of the market." Outrageous.
Precious little good has come from deregulation in
California. This crisis presents an opportunity for us to change
course. The cost of renewable energy today is lower than the cost of
natural gas. An adequate number of renewable power plants, such as wind
and solar, could provide
California with home-grown energy at stable prices without compromising
air quality.
Meanwhile in Sacramento, almost every day new energy legislation is
drafted, considered, or passed into law. Governor Davis and the legislators are
negotiating with suppliers and distributors about the terms under which
future California power will be supplied.
Now is an excellent time to write our state representatives. Let green energy not be a casualty of a poorly executed
policy. If the situation is properly handled, green energy could emerge
the clean winner, and everyone gets to come along for the victory
lap.
