El Salvador

On Saturday, January 13, 2001, an earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck El Salvador. Since then, the region has experienced over 140 perceptible aftershocks and more than 3,500 recorded tremors. As a result, as of February 2, 2001, El Salvador's National Emergency Committee (COEN) reported 827 deaths, 4,520 injuries, and 92,080 houses destroyed. In all, COEN reports that 1,160,316 people have been affected.

On Tuesday, February 13, 2001, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter Scale hit El Salvador approximately 30 kilometers east of the capital city of San Salvador in San Pedro Nonalco in the department of LaPaz. The earthquake was felt throughout El Salvador and in parts of Guatemala and Honduras.

COEN reports that the February earthquake is responsible for 283 deaths, 2,937 injuries, and the destruction of 32,148 homes. Thousands of people were left homeless by the January earthquake, and that number is expected to rise considerably as a result of the recent crisis.

  6. Please direct any questions to Patricia Lawless, Project Coordinator, plawless@juno.com, or call her at 303-298-8969 or 303-292-4838. Project Salvador will be transferring funds to the Jesuits through the Central American University (UCA) -- direct contact: Dean Brackley. Mr. Brackey is a North American Jesuit who moved to El Salvador in 1990 after the 1989 massacre at the UCA. He works in the community of Jayaque in Sonsonate, one of the regions hardest hit by the earthquake. The Jesuits also work in Santa Tecla and have a long history of organizing relief and development efforts in El Salvador.

Project Salvador may also be channeling funds to other groups in the parishes of Tierra Blanca and Berlin, both located in Usulutan. Project Salvador has direct church contacts in both areas and will be, at their request, earmarking some funds for the Women for Dignity and Life who are organizing support work in Usulutan. The greatest need is for financial contributions. However, there is also great need for antibiotics and canvas or tents to construct temporary housing. Please call Patricia Lawless before collecting any antibiotics or housing materials.
